Contemporary Batik Techniques at The Chehalem Cultural Center
Batik is the ancient art of creating designs on cloth using wax and colored dyes. Join Cheryl Rogers-Tadevich, International Batik/Block Print artist in this creative workshop. This is an opportunity to learn the methods to design your own Batiks using contemporary materials such as soy wax and GOLDEN Hi Flow acrylics, as well as traditional dyes and wax. Beautiful effects can be achieved through resist dyeing often resulting in amazing, unpredictable texture and tones.
Cheryl will guide you through a variety of techniques, using tools to apply wax and set colors. Batik designs can be as complicated or simple as the artists desires. Enjoy the freedom and immediacy of work with wax and dyes on fabric in a painterly fashion. No experience necessary.
Supplies provided by Students: Notebook/scissors, Apron to protect clothes or wear old clothes, Gloves (rubber gloves and several pairs of disposable latex ones), & Bag lunch

Exploring Textiles: Printing On Fabric
Join Cheryl Rogers-Tadevich, Batik and Block print artist, to learn the process of designing and making your own printed fabrics using contemporary materials. You will explore Monoprint using Gelli Plates, stamps and stencils to investigate color, shape, pattern and texture. GOLDEN OPEN Paints will be employed in this fun process of printmaking without a press. Students will create a stack of gorgeous hand painted/printed fabrics by layering color. This technique is engaging and easy to learn. Fiber Artists, quilters, collage artists and anyone wishing to up-cycle fabrics will benefit from this fun process! All Materials Included. Working with black and white Laser copies and GOLDEN paints, Gels and Mediums, you will explore the many possibilities of combinations on a variety of substrates. Use image transfer and mixed media to add layers of content to your work. You’ll learn how to Direct Transfer and create Acrylic Skins with black & white Laser copies onto various surfaces including canvas, paper and wood. We will be working with acrylic paints, gels and acrylic liquid mediums. You will explore the many ways to add images to personalize your artwork, creating exciting and stunning effects. Cheryl will explain in easy to understand language the differences and best uses for each of the transfer techniques covered. You will get to experiment with these techniques in class and will leave with a small collection of samples and the ability to continue working with these processes at home. Please bring a few black and white Laser copy images, no inkjet or colored copies. Open to all levels.
